Floor Preperation

Let’s face it, if you have a concrete flooring it might not be perfect. There might be holes, spalling and uneven areas. In Epoxy Flooring applications a smooth, level surface is essential to ensure proper adhesion of the epoxy coating material to the concrete substrate.

It can have holes, spalling and uneven areas which are problematic when installing flooring systems. Our prep process is thorough and provides the smoothest possible finish to ensure that your epoxy floor coating performs at its best.

There might be holes, spalling and uneven areas.

Epoxy coating systems are designed to be installed over sound, clean and dry concrete. If the existing floor is not properly prepared, the epoxy coating may fail prematurely due to adhesion problems or excessive amounts of moisture absorbed into the substrate.

Avoiding these deficiencies will ensure proper adhesion and durability of your epoxy coating system. The first step is to remove any existing floor covering that is in good condition and install a new one if necessary.

An ideal surface for applying an epoxy coating consists of freshly poured concrete with no visible defects in its surface such as holes, spalling or uneven areas that could cause cracking later on during traffic loading cycles (foot traffic).

In Epoxy Flooring applications a smooth, level surface is essential to ensure proper adhesion of the epoxy coating material to the concrete substrate.

To ensure proper adhesion of the epoxy coating material to the concrete substrate, it is imperative that the floor be free of dust, grease and dirt. Additionally, any contaminants present on the floor surface must be removed before application of an epoxy coating system. Contaminants may include:

  • Water: If you have experienced flooding in your facility or if water has seeped up through porous concrete slabs during heavy rains or freezing temperatures, it is recommended that you remove all standing water from your floors prior to applying an epoxy coating material. The best way to remove water from a slab is by using a powerful vacuum cleaner with nozzles set at high suction levels (600–1000 mm Hg).

  • Oil and Grease: Oily substances can cause problems when used in conjunction with epoxy coatings due primarily because they can affect adhesion between substrates.
